our roots … the voices rising VIRTUAL archive
In the opening Mission Statement of Founder and former Director, Storme Webber’s archival website, dedicated to the evolution of Voices Rising (see link), she writes: “In 2007, Voices Rising was born as a grassroots cultural organization at Richard Hugo House. We presented at various cultural spaces such as Langston Hughes Cultural Center, and have been Anchor Tenants at Washington Hall since 2009. I led Voices Rising in creating/producing over thirty cultural events 2007-2024, including interdisciplinary performances, dance, live art, generative workshops, theater, talking circles and my final project – the creation of a culture bearing quilt from a series of community quilting circles.”
All of that and more, you will find in the virtual archive. The more, of course, that you will find there are Storme’s words. Her incredible prose weaves the origin story of this seminal organization. Tol in her own first person narrative voice, the archive invites you in and offers you a comfortable front row seat into some of the most creative and empowering 2SBIPOC cultural and arts offerings the city of Seattle has ever experienced. And there’s still so much more from Voices Rising yet to come! So click on the link, and experience how it all began.
